To help Brian Wilson overcome his substance abuse, his family enlisted psychologist Eugene Landy, who treated him over the next 15 years.

During this period, his musical output improved, with the Beach Boys releasing 15 Big Ones and The Beach Boys Love You, and Brian returning to the stage for the first time since 1964.

However, following a 1978 tour of Australia, he relapsed into drug use and separated from his wife Marilyn, with their divorce finalised in 1979.
