Taste of success
The Beach Boys scored their first top 10 hit in 1963 with Surfin’ U.S.A. and went on to release a series of successful tracks that defined their signature California sound, including I Get Around, Help Me, Rhonda and Fun, Fun, Fun.
However, in late 1964, Brian stopped touring with the band after suffering a nervous breakdown.
The combined pressure of his musical ambitions - particularly his desire to evolve the group’s style beyond surf music - and his impulsive marriage to Marilyn Rovell led to an emotional collapse during a flight from Los Angeles to Houston, forcing him to miss a brief U.S. tour.
