During his time away from touring, Brian Wilson focused on creating the Beach Boys’ groundbreaking 1966 album Pet Sounds and released his first solo single, Caroline, No.

The album featured classics like Wouldn’t It Be Nice and God Only Knows, with the latter being praised by Sir Paul McCartney as one of the greatest songs ever written.

Although now considered a masterpiece, Pet Sounds received mixed reviews upon release and underperformed commercially, increasing tensions within the band.

Around this time, Brian also took LSD for the first time, an experience that triggered lasting paranoia and deepened his mental health struggles.
