Barbie and the Rockers
In the late 1980s, Mattel's flagship doll Barbie faced her first serious competition from Hasbro when they set about creating rock star doll Jem. Mattel got word that a rival was on the way and quickly set about creating a new doll in record time to beat their competitor to the stores. In the end, Barbie reigned supreme and the new line pulled in an estimated $70 million in 1987 alone compared to Hasbro's $21 million.
