Although this cult classic movie is beloved by plenty, just as many people are left scratching their heads when it comes to the story.

Starring Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore and Seth Rogen, ‘Donnie Darko’ deals with visions, alternate universes and time skipping, which mostly definitely proved a bit too much for some audience members.

Even Robert Ebert, one of the most acclaimed film critics ever, admitted he struggled to understand what was going on.

In his 2001 review, he wrote: “I could tell you what I think happens at the end, and what the movie is about, but I would not be sure I was right. The movie builds twists on top of turns until the plot wheel revolves one time too many, and we're left scratching our heads.”
