Inception
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy, the film centres around a thief who is able to enter people’s dreams who is ultimately tasked with planting an idea in someone’s mind.
Of course, dealing with dreams within dreams, eventually some audience members will be left scratching their heads, and the ending, which sees Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) finally reunite with his children, before panning to a still-spinning spinning top confused many as to what happened.
Reflecting on the movie, Christopher Nolan explained that he wanted to leave the audience with an “intellectual ambiguity”.
He said: “There is a nihilistic view of that ending, right? But also, he’s moved on and is with his kids. The ambiguity is not an emotional ambiguity. It’s an intellectual one for the audience.”
