The Platform
Starring Ivan Massague, Alexandra Masangkay and Zoirom Eguileor, the movie sees inmates kept in a multi-levelled prison in which the upper levels receive as much food as they want, whereas the lower levels must eat what is left and are forced to fight one another for survival.
The picture begins to get complicated when hallucinations are introduced, which play a pivotal role in the ending. This, as well as the symbolism of ‘the girl’, threw audiences, as now they had to question what parts of the movie were real, and which were a figment of the characters’ imagination.
Perhaps annoyingly for some, director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia asserted that he decided to purposefully leave it ambiguous, so that moviegoers could make their own interpretations.
In an interview, he said: “Ultimately I wanted it to be open to interpretation, whether the plan worked and the higher-ups even care about the people in the pit. We actually did film a different ending of the girl arriving at the first level, but we took it out of the movie. I’ll leave what happens to your imagination.”
