The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ may be a horror classic, but that doesn’t mean everyone understood what was happening.

The 1980 movie, which stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, sees Jack and his family move into a hotel with a dark past, before he loses his sanity due to the effects of the building, putting his family in grave danger.

The ending, in which Jack appears in an old photo of the hotel, potentially suggests that he has been trapped in the premises for the rest of time, though of course, nothing is confirmed.

Reflecting on the movie, Kubrick said: “I hope the audience has had a good fright, has believed the film while they were watching it, and retains some sense of it. The ballroom photograph at the very end suggests the reincarnation of Jack.'
