Shutter Island
Even Martin Scorsese, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in history, has made the odd movie that has perplexed audiences, most notably ‘Shutter Island’.
The psychological thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley, and sees a pair of US marshals travel to an isolated asylum to investigate the disappearance of a patient.
Things start to get confusing when the movie begins to explore illusions, mental illness and perception of reality, with the plot twisting and turning so much, that it left many audience members completely baffled as to what they had watched.
In fact, the movie was so complicated, that Scorsese admitted he regretted making the film, and felt “encouraged” to direct it after winning first Best Director Oscar for the 2006 drama ‘The Departed”.
He said: “[Winning the Oscar] encouraged me to make another picture with 'Shutter Island', but it turned out I shed have gone on probably to do Silence”.
