Alternate casting

The mischievous spirit is one of Michael Keaton’s most well-known roles, but the actor wasn’t always going to play Beetlejuice.

Director Tim Burton originally wanted to cast ‘The World’s Greatest Entertainer’ Sammy Davis Jr, though producer David Geffen instead suggested Keaton.

As for Delia Deetz, Anjelica Huston was initially signed to play the character, though had to part ways with the project after falling ill - leaving Catherine O’Hara with the part.

Even so, the actress wasn’t originally sold on the movie, and it took Burton flying out to personally talk to her to convince O’Hara to sign on the dotted line.

The actress likely is thankful she signed onto ‘Beetlejuice’ as it was on the movie’s set that she met her future husband Bo Welch.
