The filmmakers initially hoped The Conjuring could land a PG-13 rating to reach a wider audience.
Despite minimal gore, no nudity, and limited bad language, the MPAA still rated it R - reasoning that The Conjuring was “just too scary” for a PG-13 rating.
Director James Wan recalled: “We were told it’s because it’s just too scary. There’s nothing we can do about that.”
