Alternate ending

While the duel does leave Wick’s return open-ended, the hitman’s fate was initially a lot clearer.

After being shown the movie, Lionsgate started to get cold feet regarding killing off the star of one of their biggest franchises, and so commissioned an alternate ending to ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ that heavily implied the assassin was still alive.

However, when ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ was screened to test audiences, viewers hated this new ending.

As a result, the original conclusion was reinserted into the movie, leaving it up to audiences to decide whether John Wick was still out there.

Even so, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’s conclusion has now somewhat changed anyway, as a fifth movie with Keanu Reeves was confirmed to be in development by Lionsgate in 2025.
