The Thing
‘The Thing’ may have helped revolutionise practical and special effects in Hollywood and is now considered a sci-fi horror classic, it was left floundering at the box office in 1982.
Made on a budget of $15 million - with $1.5 million being spent on special effects alone - it earned only $19.6 million, making ‘The Thing’ only the 42nd highest-grossing movie of the year.
As a result of the film’s poor performance, director John Carpenter was dropped from his next project ‘Firestarter’, the 1984 adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novel of the same name.
