The Wizard of Oz
While ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is one of Hollywood's most iconic and important pictures ever, the film was not received well when it hit theatres in 1939.
On a budget of $2.7 million, the movie was only able to pull in roughly $3 million at the box office in its first outing as it had to content with the end of the Great Depression and compete with 'Gone With the Wind', though eventually turned a profit once it was rereleased to cinemas in 1949 and made $35.3 million globally.
While it wasn’t initially a financial hit, 'The Wizard of Oz' saw success at the Academy Awards and was nominated for five Oscars - ultimately taking home two for Best Original Song for 'Over the Rainbow' and Best Original Score.
