Lowering the rating
One of the most iconic moments in the ‘Kill Bill’ franchise is when the colour shifts to back and white for the Yakuza fight in the House of Blue Leaves, but it wasn’t simply a stylistic choice.
In an effort to avoid an NC-17 rating or cutting out any of the cartoonish violence, Quentin Tarantino chose to film, the sequence without colour, which ultimately resulted in the picture receiving an R rating.
The director also chose to shoot the scene in black and white as a nod to kung fu flicks from the ‘70s, which also filmed fight sequences without colour to ensure censors didn’t clamp down on their movies.
