Based on a true story
The plot of ‘Footloose’ involves a small town minister banning dancing.
Despite the premise being seemingly unrealistic it is actually based on a true story.
In the religious community of Elmore City, Oklahoma, the higher-ups opted to ban dancing in 1898 in an effort to reduce alcohol consumption amongst youngsters, and remained in place for 80 years, until a group of teens campaigned for its repeal during their senior prom in 1978.
After reading about the ordeal, Dean Pitchford decided to pen a screenplay for ‘Footloose’, and eventually delivered the film that we all know and love today.
