Don Johnson wasn't wanted at first

Don Johnson made the role of James 'Sonny' Crockett his own but NBC had reservations about casting him in the role as some of his other shows had been unsuccessful.

'CHiPs' star Larry Wilcox had been lined up for the part but ultimately missed out on the role when bosses opted for Johnson.

He later said: "On the day before Christmas after helping them to find an actor, I was informed that they were not going to use me and in fact were going to use Don Johnson.

"It was a cold blow and a manipulative blow."
