How did she become Tina?
In 1960, Ike Turner wrote the song ‘A Fool in Love’ for singer Art Lassiter.
But when she was supposed to record the track with her backing vocalists, the Artettes, she was a no-show.
As the studio had been booked and paid for, Bullock suggest she sing the lead.
So, the demo was laid down and local St. Louis disc jockey Dave Dixon convinced Ike to send the tape to Juggy Murray, president of R&B label Sue Records.
Juggy was blown away, describing the vocals as sounding “like screaming dirt, it was a funky sound”.
Murray bought the track and told Ike to make Bullock the star.
Ike then gave her the name Tina because it rhymed with Sheena, inspired by Sheena, Queen of the Jungle and Nyoka the Jungle Girl.
