Tom Hanks paid a physical price for his Oscar-calibre performances in Cast Away and Philadelphia.

He caught a serious staph infection from a cut while filming Cast Away that nearly turned septic, and he also developed Type 2 diabetes after extreme weight fluctuations across roles.

Hanks later said: “I think I was genetically inclined to get it, and the lifestyle I was leading just kicked it in.”
