Hugh Jackman has hailed Sir Patrick Stewart as "one of the greats of stage and screen".

The award-winning actor has passed away, aged 86, following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body dementia, and Hugh, his former co-star, has taken to social media to pay a glowing tribute to Stewart.

Hugh, 58 - who played Wolverine in the X-Men film franchise - wrote on Instagram: "We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days."

George Takei has also paid tribute to Stewart, who portrayed Jean-Luc Picard, the commanding officer of the starship USS Enterprise, in Star Trek.

George, 89 - who played Mr Sulu in the Star Trek franchise - wrote on Instagram: "Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain."

Elsewhere, Huddersfield Town, Stewart's beloved soccer team, have paid their own tribute to the late actor, describing the proud Yorkshireman as a "Terrier in every sense".

The statement posted on X read: "All at Huddersfield Town are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong supporter Sir Patrick Stewart. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this sad time.

"A titan of his craft and a legend and hero to millions worldwide, his legacy will live on. Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick was a Terrier in every sense, and we’re proud to have counted him as one of our own.

"Once a Terrier, always a Terrier [heart emoji] (sic)"
