Wes Craven wasn't first choice as director
Wes Craven became a legend in the horror genre due to films like 'The Last House on the Left', 'The Hills Have Eyes' and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, however, he wasn’t the studio’s first choice to direct 'Scream'.
Initially, Miramax was interested in bringing ‘The Evil Dead’ director Sam Raimi on board or ’28 Days Later’ filmmaker Danny Boyle, though both turned the project down because they viewed ‘Scream’ as more of a comedy than a true horror film.
Craven was then approached to helm the film, though he turned it down after deciding he wanted to take a break from the genre.
However, the filmmaker was eventually tempted back to the project after hearing Drew Barrymore was attached.
