Fact vs fiction
As a historical epic, you’d expect ‘Braveheart’ to give a fair and accurate representation of the people and places of the time. However, the movie's accuracy came into question.
While the plot heavily revolves around William Wallace marrying Princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau), the pair never met in real life.
Similarly, kilts were yet to be invented, but the garment can be seen frequently throughout the movie’s runtime.
As for the Battle of Stirling Bridge, the bridge cannot be seen at all during the scene.
Despite these historical discrepancies, Mel Gibson insisted they didn’t matter, because he was just trying to create an entertaining "cinematic experience".
He said: "Some people said in telling the story we messed up history. It doesn't bother me because what I'm giving you is a cinematic experience and I think films are there first to entertain, then teach, then inspire."
