A near fatal horse-riding accident

Given the film has some very visceral action scenes, it won’t come as a shock to hear Mel Gibson didn’t finish ‘Braveheart’ completely unscathed.

For a battle scene, the star’s horse reared up and fell backwards, flinging Mel from the animal.

He recounted: "There was a horse that nearly killed me. He had a good trick where he did this whole rear-up thing, but he'd also fall backwards, which is a problem if you've fallen off fast and you're behind him."

Luckily, Mel managed to escape after his stunt double ran in and pulled him out of the way just as the horse fell.
