John Hughes was exhilarated when he got his hands on the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Ferris and his friends 'borrow' in the movie, but wanted to ensure the car didn’t get a scratch on it.

After deciding it was "way too expensive to destroy", the director requested that several replicas were brought in for the more action-packed driving scenes.

John recalled: "They were pretty good replicas. For the tight shots, I really needed a real one, so we brought one into the stage and shot the inserts with it."
