Love letter to Chicago
As well as telling a captivating and fun story about cheeky teens, director John Hughes was determined to show off Chicago to the best of his ability with the film.
The creative mind had grown up in the city, and went out of his way to include helicopter shots of downtown Chicago to show what it had to offer.
He recalled: "It was my city, and I really wanted to show it at its best. I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could, not just in the architecture and landscape but the spirit."
Even so, the picture wasn't entirely shot in the city, as Ferris Bueller's family home was actually located in Long Beach, California.
The director admitted not being able to a film in a genuine suburban Chicago house "disappointed" him.
