MacGyver’s McDonald's roots

MacGyver’s first name wasn’t the only part of the hero’s identity that proved to be an obstacle for the production team!

Creator Lee David Zlotoff initially intended to call the character “Guy”, but then became convinced that the name wasn’t compelling enough.

After looking for inspiration, Lee realised that adding “Mc” or “Mac” in front of words had become popular due to the fast food chain McDonald's.

The writer recalled: “So I suggested we call our hero MacGuy. But everyone thought it really needed to have three syllables ... and we finally got MacGyver and agreed that was the one.”
