Director John Hughes was a huge fan of improvisation, and actively encouraged the actors to go with the flow.

For instance, Anthony Michael Ball's character Brian Johnson was never meant to say “so I can vote” when he was asked why he was carrying a fake ID, and Judd Nelson's iconic final pose at the end of the film as Bender - throwing his fist in the air - was also not in the script.
