Val Kilmer didn’t want to be in Top Gun

It's fair to say that Val Kilmer's smarmy pilot character Lieutenant Tom "Iceman" Kazansky is a major part of the movie, however, Kilmer wasn't very keen on appearing in the blockbuster.

The actor "felt the script was silly" and he "disliked warmongering films".

But after talking through the film's plot with director Tony Scott, Val eventually bought into the idea.

So, by the time the sequel, 'Top Gun: Maverick', Val was desperate to reprise his role, and personally reached out to Tom Cruise about appearing in the picture.
