Tom Cruise wasn't first pick for Maverick

When you think of Maverick you can only picture Tom Cruise, but that wasn't always going to be the case.

'Grease' legend John Travolta was approached to play the fighter pilot.

However, the studio eventually backed out of the deal after deciding he was too expensive and too risky, with him recently suffering a number of box office bombs.

Patrick Swayze was also offered the role, though he too turned it down after finding that the movie wasn't for him.
