Keanu handicapped
Before production started on the first movie, Keanu Reeves had had to undergo back surgery, due to a fusion in his spin that had begun to cause paralysis in his legs.
In order to ensure he was safe during his four-month long martial arts training, Keanu had to wear a heavy neck brace, which is why in the movie, the actor’s posture is very still and up-right, nor does he do any kicks above the waist.
Recalling the situation, the actor revealed he had kept his surgery a secret to ensure he wasn’t recast.
He said: “I never actually told anyone because I didn't want to tell anyone I wouldn't be able to do the film. What was cool though was, at the time, the way to recover from spinal surgery was different. They put the plate in my neck and told me to start moving right away.
“I had to train for ‘The Matrix’ in a neck brace.”
