Legal troubles
It turns out not everybody was a fan of ‘The Matrix’.
After the first movie’s release in 1999, writer Sophia Stewart accused Lana Wachoski of stealing the concept of ‘The Matrix; from her 1983 story, ‘The Third Eye’ and claimed she was defrauded of $200 million, plus royalties.
On her website, where she called herself ‘The Mother of The Matrix’, Sophia claimed that she had submitted her story in a 1986 magazine ad, but never heard back from Lana.
Ultimately, the lawsuit was dismissed, with the judge ruling that the writer and her attorneys “had not entered any evidence to bolster its key claims or demonstrated any striking similarity between her work and the accused directors’ films”.
