The 1990s
In the 90s, Batman continued to be box office gold.
Tim Burton’s second film ‘Batman Returns,’ was released in 1992, and saw Keaton return as The Dark Knight to battle Danny DeVito's Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman.
The movie was another hit and following that ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ was created, gaining several new fans. The show was on for four years and catalysed spin offs such as ‘Superman’ and ‘The Justice League'.
Burton left the film franchise and Joel Schumacher took over control for two films which didn't live up to the previous two movies.
Keaton gave up the keys to the Batmobile and Val Kilmer took over for 1995's 'Batman Forever'.
George Clooney was in the cape and cowl for 1997's 'Batman and Robin' and the critical mauling the movie received led to Warner Bros. shelving plans for future films.
