Allison Janney took home her eighth Emmy award at the ceremony as scooped the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series gong for her portrayal of US President Grace Penn in Netflix series The Diplomat.

The win saw the 66-year-old star match the record tally previously set by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman, with Jean Smart also winning her eighth Emmy at Monday's ceremony.
