What's the story behind Miss Hoolie's hair?
It took approximately one hour every day to style Julie Wilson Nimmo’s hair into the iconic “flicked-out bob” for her role as Miss Hoolie in Balamory, with two makeup artists using large styling tongs each morning to achieve the look. Nimmo described the hairstyle as being “lacquered” into a helmet, saying it was often curled so firmly it felt like “wood,” while the entire process was kept out of sight of child actors to preserve the on-screen magic. The distinctive style was inspired by Lady Miss Kier from 90s dance group Deee-Lite. The styling may have been intense, but, as Nimmo put it, “the price you pay for having an iconic hairdo.”
