The Wicked Witch of the West is instantly recognisable by her vivid green skin, but achieving that look was a nightmare for actress Margaret Hamilton.

The makeup used to coat her face and hands contained copper, a toxic ingredient that could have caused serious health issues if not removed with extreme care.

Makeup artist Jack Young recalled: “Every night when I was taking off the Witch’s makeup, I would make sure her face was thoroughly clean. Spotlessly clean. Because you don’t take chances with green.”
