Wide-eyed Dorothy Gale may be Judy Garland’s most iconic role, but she wasn’t always destined to play the part.

Shirley Temple had initially been promised the role by 20th Century Fox, but when MGM Studios secured the rights to The Wizard of Oz, the arrangement collapsed and Garland was ultimately cast as Dorothy.

Temple later admitted she wasn’t too disappointed by the outcome, and later said: “Sometimes, the gods know best.”
