Voicing Dot Matrix

Joan Rivers famously voiced Dot Matrix, but she never wore the bulky costume - that job went to mime Lorene Yarnell.

Yarnell was originally meant to voice the character too, but her performance didn’t quite fit, so Mel Brooks brought in Rivers during post-production.

While Rivers recorded her lines in a cool studio, Yarnell sweated it out in Arizona’s scorching Yuma Desert.

Daphne Zuniga - who played Princess Vespa in Spaceballs - said: “We’d have to keep opening the mask so that she could breathe.

“This poor woman… I think she lost a lot of weight—and she was tiny to start with.”
