Costume woes
The late John Candy’s Barf - a half-man, half-dog sidekick - was a clear Chewbacca parody, but the original costume design would’ve hidden his face completely.
MGM wasn’t having that, so Brooks and Candy settled on light makeup and a pair of big floppy dog ears instead.
To make the ears move, the crew wired in animatronics powered by a 30-pound battery pack Candy had to wear on set. It made performing tough and limited his comedic timing
Bill Pullman recalled: “John’s sense of comedy was so ephemeral. There was real difficulty delivering that while trusting the ears…”
Still, Candy stayed calm and professional.
Pullman said: “He never yelled. He never got angry. He would sit down, say he needed a break… then he would get up and say ‘Ok, let’s try it again.’”
