Writing in an injury
During production, Brad Pitt was filming a rainy chase scene in Los Angeles with Kevin Spacey (who played the deranged killer John Doe) when he slipped and managed to smashed his arm through a car window, severing a tendon and cutting himself down to the bone.
After a bit of time off to recover, the actor returned to set wearing a cast, which initially posed a bit of a problem to director David Fincher because it wouldn’t line up with the continuity of the film.
After a bit of brainstorming, the filmmaker opted to write Brad’s injury into the script, with David Mills saying he had broken his arm.
Still, for earlier scenes that were shot after the actor’s accident, Brad can be seen hiding his left arm, as it is still wrapped in a cast.
