Maintaining the tone
‘Seven’ is a very bleak story, and director David Fincher went to extreme lengths to ensure the miserable tone remained a constant throughout the picture’s runtime.
The moviemaker opted to utilise a technique called bleach bypass - also known as skip bleach or silver retention - in which a chemical is applied to film stock that desaturates images and retains the silver colouring, ultimately darkening the picture.
As well as this filming method, David used a lot of rain and fog machines to convey the dreary streets of New York City.
