Original rating
Before NC-17 came along in 1990, X was the highest rating a Hollywood movie could receive, and 'Total Recall' very nearly was slapped with it.
In the picture's original cut, there was a plethora of incredibly graphic violence and bloodshed, and so was rated X – making the movie one of the last films in cinematic history to receive the rating.
However, TriStar Pictures were not happy with the rating, and so tasked director Paul Verhoeven to cut out as much of the goriness as possible.
Upon re-watching the first cut, even Paul was shocked how graphic his movie was.
He said: "I was amazed how violent it was. I looked and went, 'My God! This is ultra-violence!' There's cutting off arms and so on. There's a lot of blood and death. But I thought it was funny."
Eventually, the filmmaker was able to remove enough of the graphic scenes to earn the flick a softer R rating.
