Controversy
With the amount of profanity, sex and substances, it won’t come as a shock to learn that ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ ruffled some feathers.
Many criticised Martin Scorsese for glorifying Jordan Belfort’s life of debauchery and fraud, which left a sour taste in some mouths considering the movie released fairly soon after the 2008 financial crisis.
The film also ended up being outright banned in several regions like Nepal and Malaysia, while the United Arab Emirates demanded 45 minutes of the three-hour-long flick be cut.
Despite the controversy, Leonardo quickly came to his director’s defence, and emphasised they didn’t set out to glorify the actions of a criminal, just present an accurate portrayal of events on screen.
He said: “I wanted to make an unapologetic film on the subject matter that didn’t give any false sense of empathy for the character, but that instead was an analysis of man gone awry.”
