Fact and fiction
While the movie is based on disgraced stockbroker Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the same name, not everything was translated from the page onto the screen.
For example, a lot of the names were swapped out for the film, like Jordan’s first wife Teresa - who was actually called Denise.
As for his best friend and Stratton Oakmont co-founder Danny Porush, the character’s name had to be changed to Donnie Azoff after he threatened to sue the production team.
Still, Jordan was incredibly open with the moviemakers, and spent a lot of time talking to Leonardo DiCaprio - who played him - about his exploits
The actor recalled: “[He was] incredibly open about his life, especially the most embarrassing parts. I interviewed him incessantly and tried to pull out every detail I possibly could. We incorporated a lot of other stories that weren't even in the book into the movie.”
