Easy casting

‘Blade Runner’s calm and collected villain Roy Batty - the leader of the renegade replicants - is one of the most intimidating characters put to screen, and Ridley Scott knew exactly who he wanted for the role from the start.

After watching the actor in a few Paul Verhoeven movies like the war thriller ‘Soldier of Orange’, the director was desperate to cast Rutger Hauer as Roy, so much so, that he gave Rutger the part without even meeting him.

After his passing in 2019, Ridley paid tribute to the actor, describing him as a “gentle giant” who helped him through “the entire process” of making the picture.
