Robert Duvall
Robert Duvall, 93, played Tom Hagen in 1972's ‘The Godfather,’ as well as in its 1974 sequel ‘The Godfather Part II,’ both directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Why did Duvall not return for the third instalment? It seems the actor was not satisfied with how much he was set to earn.
In an appearance on CBS’ ’60 Minutes II’, he said: “If they paid [Al] Pacino twice what they paid me, that’s fine, but not three or four times, which is what they did.”
After turning down the role, Coppola rewrote the plot of ‘The Godfather Part III’ (1990), suggesting that Duvall’s character had died at some point before the story begins.
