It was inspired by a real family trip

During a trip to Europe, the movie’s writer, John Hughes, became lost in his thoughts, and began to wonder, “What if one of the kids were left behind?”, as his son James Hughes recounts.

Inspired by the thought, John wrote down his ideas when he got home, and managed to produce a script in just nine days.
