1D were put together on ‘The X Factor’ in July 2010 by judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh.

The five members - Zayn, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan – had all auditioned as solo singers.

Following the show - on which they finished third in the public vote - One Direction quickly become the hottest pop act in the world, achieveing global success, something that Zayn admits was hard for the teenagers to cope with.

He said: “I think we just got thrown into the deep end and we kind of just have to swim, and I feel like we did a good job in terms of like, you know, the keeping it together and making the music that we were meant to make.”
