The ‘Modern Family’ star had two kidney transplants. After being diagnosed with kidney dysplasia – where the kidney doesn’t develop properly – her father donated her first kidney. But in 2017 the kidney had to be removed as her body rejected it and Hyland’s younger brother Ian stepped up instead.

She said of her health problems: "For a long time, I was contemplating taking my own life because I didn't want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad."
