Achievements and Passions

Stewart's experience of domestic violence as a child led him to dedicating decades to breaking the silence surrounding abuse – he became a patron of the UK's largest domestic violence charity Refuge in 2007 and collaborated with Amnesty International to produce short films and material targeting violence against women.

The actor was also a passionate supporter of his local football team Huddersfield Town and had a keen interest in motorsport – even competing at the Silverstone Classic Celebrity Challenge in 2012 after obtaining a racing licence at the age of 71.

Stewart was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for services to drama.
