He Never Really Left the Stage
Despite his huge screen success, Stewart repeatedly returned to theatre.
He created a celebrated one-man production of A Christmas Carol, playing more than 40 characters in the 2007 West End show, and later starred alongside David Tennant in Hamlet.
He also reunited with X-Men co-star Sir Ian McKellen for productions of Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land, including a Broadway run in 2013-14.
His final major stage role was as Hirst in Harold Pinter's No Man's Land in 2016.
